SS Peter and Paul, Apostles:

pray for us and for all Christians

Peter has often been called the ‘Prince of the Apostles’ because of the words of Jesus re-naming him, from Simon to Cephas. This was the Aramaic form of the Greek word Peter, which means ‘rock’. Jesus said that on this rock he would build his Church.

But both Peter and Paul came to be seen as having different rôles to play within the leadership of the Church:

Peter in witnessing to the Lordship of Christ

Paul in developing an understanding of its meaning for Christ’s followers.

Peter and Paul have been remembered jointly on this day since the very early days of the Church, it being regarded as the anniversary of their martyrdom for Christ in Rome (about the year 64).

SS Peter and Paul lived in times of great turmoil, unrest and at times, violence so, in their company,

we invite you to join with us in this Prayer

which arises from the troubles of recent days, in Yemen, Tunisia, the USA and in areas of the Middle East:

Compassionate God and Father of all,
we are horrified at violence
in so many parts of the world.
It seems that none are safe, and some are terrified.

Hold back the hands that kill and maim;
turn around the hearts that hate.
Grant instead your strong Spirit of Peace –
peace that passes our understanding
but changes lives,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

We invite you to join us for Mass tomorrow morning at 10am in Church

when we shall be singing this as one of our worship songs – join us then

and why not listen and join in now – ‘We shall stand with our feet on the Rock’

We shall stand With our feet on the Rock

Whatever men may say

We’ll lift your Your Name up high

And we shall walk

Through the darkest night

Setting our faces like flint

We’ll walk into the light …

Grant, Father, your strong Spirit of Peace –
peace that passes our understanding
but changes lives,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
